On July 7th 2021, President of Haiti Jovenel Moise was assassinated by a group of foreign mercenaries, with Ariel Henry assumed office of acting prime minister. In 2022, further protests erupted in response to energy prices and a federation of Haitian gangs created a blockade of Haiti's largest fuel depot. Combined with an outbreak of cholera and acute hunger, the crisis has led the United Nations Security Council unanimously voting to impose sanctions on criminals in the country.
On March 4 2024, Haiti declared a state of emergency and nighttime curfew amid a surge of violence after armed gangs attacked and freed thousands of inmates. As of November 11th 2024, armed gangs have seized control of most of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince and have seized the main airport. The transitional presidential council, tasked with reestablishing democratic order, have elected to replace Haiti's Prime Minister (who they chose) after 6 months of office following a series of corruption scandals and infighting that plague the council.
